Rules of 2016 Competition

  • Entrants are under no obligation to participate in the Judging process.
  • The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over at the time of entering. International entries are welcome, but must be written in English.
  • Staff at The Magpie’s Nest and members of the competition organising committee are not permitted to enter.
  • The closing date for the competition is 31 December 2016.
  • All entries are judged anonymously and the poet’s name, address, or any other identifying marks must not appear on the same sheet as the poem itself.
  • All entries will be considered anonymously during both rounds of the judging process.
  • Results will be posted on website (& mailed to all postal entrants who included a stamped addressed postcard or envelop marked “Results”) after announcement on 28 February 2017.
  • Entry implies acceptance of all rules.
  • There is no limit on the number of entries a single entrant can make.
  • Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy.
  • Under no circumstances can alterations be made to poems once entered.
  • If you would like confirmation that your postal entry has been received, please include a stamped addressed envelope/postcard with your entry. Online entries made via the website will receive automatic confirmation at the time of submission.
  • Telephone or email confirmation of receipt is not available.
  • The competition organisers reserve the right to change the judging panel without notice and not to award prizes if, in the judges’ opinion, such an action is justified.
  • The judges’ decision is final and neither the judges nor the competition organisers will enter into any correspondence.
  • All entries will be assigned an ID number and made anonymous upon receipt.
  • The Magpie’s Nest will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to your personal data.
  • The Magpie’s Nest reserves the right to amend these Rules where it is deemed necessary to do so. Any changes to the Rules will be posted on The Magpie’s Nest website.
  • Postal Entries should be sent to: The Magpie’s Nest, 176 Stoney Lane, Springfield, Birmingham, B12 8AN.
  • The Magpie’s Nest reserves the right to disqualify any entry if it has reasonable grounds to believe that the entrant has breached any of these Rules.
  • Copyright remains with the author, but The Magpie’s Nest reserves the right to publish free of charge the winning and commended poems in any format whatsoever for up to one year from the closing of entries.
  • The actual given name of the entrant must be given, even if the poem is to be published under a pen name.
  • All work must be typed or word-processed, clearly legible and written in English.
  • Translations into English of work written in other languages can be accepted, provided that the source text is the entrant’s own original work. Translations into English of work published (in print or on a website including blogs and social networking sites) elsewhere in other languages will not be accepted.
  • All poems must have a title and must not exceed 40 lines in length (excluding title). Entries can be on any subject.
  • Poems must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Entries must not have been published, self-published, published on a website, broadcast or featured among the winners in another competition before 31 December 2016.
  • Posted entries should be typed and printed in black ink on A4 paper at a minimum type size of 12pt.  Entries can be double or single-spaced.
  • All poems must have a title and must not exceed 40 lines in length (excluding the title). Entries can be on any subject.
  • Entries that have been shortlisted or commended in other competitions are still eligible provided they have not won any prize.
  • Poems that have been simultaneously entered in other current competitions are permitted, but entrants must notify the organisers immediately if they win a prize or are published before the date on which our winners are due to be notified.
  • Handwritten entries cannot be accepted.
  • The first poem submitted costs £2. Subsequent entries in the same submission cost £1 per poem.
  • Payments must be made in £ sterling. Cheques, credit/debit cards and postal orders are accepted. Cheques should be made payable to The Magpie’s Nest. Please write your name and phone number on the back of cheques.
  • Prize winners and commended poets will be notified by 28 February 2017.
  • List of prize winners will be published on The Magpie’s Nest website on 28 February 2017.
  • All entrants who provide a valid email address will be notified about the outcome of their entry by the end of March 2017.
